Candelaria is a Catholic teenager who wants to do things right. She belongs to a traditional family and attends a nun’s school where she is taught that to please God she must obey and be chaste, but Candelaria begins to lust after her neighbor and her best friend at school. When Carla, a young drummer of a rock band, comes to replace a teacher at the institution, Candelaria has access to a universe hitherto unknown to her that begins to crack the walls of the kingdom in which she has lived until now. When the girl decides to let herself be carried away by her curiosity, she will be filled with guilt and the feeling that she no longer deserves God’s love.
Burning kingdom explores desire, guilt, and the influence of institutions on a woman’s life.
On her second feature film as a director, Catalina Arroyave (Days of the Whale, 2019) continues exploring the universe of the youth in a city as complex as Medellin.
